I second Andre's motion!  If this country is ever to have a solid renewable-energy program, we need some kind of structure from Congress.  As I understand it, the Renewable Portfolio Standard would set both direction and quantitative goals for contributions of renewable energy sources to our overall national energy supplies.  

Let me add one more thing you might send to your elected representatives.  Perhaps the simplest thing that Congress could do to encourage investment in alternative fuels would be to set a floor price on crude oil.  Basically, the last time there was a big push in alternative fuels, OPEC noticed and dropped the price of crude (which they can do at will), making the alternative-fuels projects uneconomic.  When the alternative energy products had gone bankrupt, the price of crude went up again.  That same process could happen again, and would be a disaster for the US - though great for OPEC.  If investors knew that the price of crude oil would effectively not go below, say $50/bbl for the next 20 years, money would flood into alternative projects.  If OPEC lowered the price of crude below $50, the difference would be collected by the US Treasury and go to reduce our national debt - not a bad idea, either.   How much would it cost to set up a floor price?  ZERO!    We need to do it, AS

Tomorrow, the U.S. Senate will vote to create the
first-ever national "Renewable Portfolio Standard."

This measure would set nationwide benchmarks for
increasing electricity generation from clean,
renewable resources like wind, solar, and geothermal
in every state. For Utah, this could mean wind energy
instead of pollution from coal-fired power, and solar
power instead of nuclear waste.

But for this to happen, we need Utah's Senators Orrin
Hatch and Bob Bennett to get behind the clean energy
push. If you think more of our country's electricity
should be generated from clean, renewable resources,
please call Sen. Hatch and Sen. Bennett and ask them
to support the creation of a national Renewable
Portfolio Standard.

We need to let our Senators know that Utahns want
clean energy and we want it now. Because this vote
