Hi, Bob,
Sorry I'm slow responding, I'm still learning how to handle this list.
Actually, you can travel safely on most freeways at 60 mph IF you are not in a metro area. Slower can be dangerous, especially in cities. I believe the following rule is close at rational highway speeds: your mileage improves 10% for every 5 mph that you slow down. This can be verified by doing some math, which I will share if you are into that sort of thing. So, here is my projected mileage for that same trip at different speeds:
50 mph: 80 mph
55 mph: 73
60 mph: 66
65 mph: 59
70 mph: 53
75 mph: 48
80 mph: 43
These are approximate. I can calculate pretty accurate values if anybody cares. The 10% rule should be pretty good for your cars too.

Very cool on so many levels. Question: 60mph is about 20mph below average
traffic on that run to So.Cal. What is your mileage like when you move close
to average speed...75 mph?
