[Biodiesel In Utah] BioD Catalyst Question

Without Lye, yes, without methanol, no. The process is called
heterogeneious catalyst (as opposed to homogenious catalyst, which is our
process) and as far as I know there are only two companies using it. One is
Axens, which is a Europe-based multinational who is also slated to build the
largest biodiesel plant on record for ADM (I believe), Archers Daniel
Midland - the most federally subsidized company in the country - mostly
because of ethanol prospects, which is supposed to be 50 million gallons a
year and I believe will be based out of South Dakota. The other is our own
Ron Crafts in Orem Utah of Domestic Energy Partners, betterbiodiesel.com.
Ron was one of our speakers at the annual Biodiesel in Utah forum at the
library. This is also the process for Utah's first biodiesel plant which is
three million gallons a year, run by BioUSA and the owner / CEO is on this
list. Solid catalyst is hard to create supposedly but once you get it
dialed, it creates a clean glycerin in usable form, and can also supposedly
easily produce a clean fuel regardless of quality of feedstock..
So, that is the story on it. I don't think the 'technology' will ever be
available to us because both companies keep it under tight lips and to use
it, I believe both must set it up and there is a licencing fee. It is
literally a solid catalyst that lasts for some time then needs to be
replenished ( I believe every couple years with regular use). Ron Crafts
was mentioning that they would create a small processor, similar to their
display model, for guys like us but I bet it will still be near $10G or so
to purchase.. And I believe they are continuous flow if I remember
correctly..
Best, Andre

I havn't heard of this process becoming available to average Joes like us.
I know that there are a lot of smart people trying to create a solid system
for mass production, but i think alot of the techonology is way specified
and hard for the home brewer to create.

I remember reading a few months back that some Japanese researchers had
found a way to make Bio D without the need for Lye and Methanol. Does
anyone know their process? Has it been commercialized or used by
homebrewers?
